You can tell why it was a studio staple for decades.
Never had a real one. Don't think I every played through one. Can't speak to "nailing the tone" (but I'll assume it's on par with everything else UA does). It's truly inspiring and fun to use. Thinking of it as a reverb is selling it way, way short. Many pitch, imaging, delay options to play with too. All sound really great.

I love the plate on this plugin but they’re all great. I wish I didn’t love that plate so much so I could play with the other settings because just rolling through the presets gets great sounds.

What's Old Is New Again
When I used to own Noise New York, a 16-track recording studio in the early 1980s, we would rent the AMS (obviously analog) for some critical mixing. I left the business in 1986 and became a lawyer. About 5 years ago, I returned to composing using Logic Pro, and external plug-ins. Recently, I updated to the Apollo/Twin and started collecting plug-ins, which have revolutionized by composing and mixes. I consider the AMS an integral part of my arsenal, and other UA plug-ins. The magic of digital.

We had two of these @ Paisley Park where I worked. The "Ambience" program alone is worth the price. Nothing like it on anything else.

Want 80s reverb. Welcome to the AMS.
I produce a lot of 80s era music and this is an essential tool for me. I love the 224 and 480 but the AMS is really the standout digi-reverb for me to create that 80s sound. Obviously great on drums but also amazing on vocals and pads. Well actually amazing on everything. NonLin prog is to die for. Also the expanded version has 9 extra programs that were initially not available to the original hardware users unless they had the special magic wand (go check the history of this bit of hardware).

Complicated?
Of course, this one has the same layout as the hardware one, I know that - but I find this plugin a bit complicated. Many others are quite easy to get a nice sound through. This one is quite hard, and I find the use for this plugin a little bit limited. This is not a reverb for everything and everyone. Also, it's a bit expensive.
