Authentic Analog-style Echo — No Tape Required

The Universal Audio Galaxy ’74 Tape Echo & Reverb pedal is an expertly crafted emulation of a lauded ‘70s-era Japanese tape reverb/delay unit, with an all-encompassing slew of upgrades that arguably make it an upgrade over the vintage original. Every nuance of the original’s wow, flutter, and gritty preamp are perfectly replicated, offering full modeling of the multi-head tape delay mechanism, tap tempo, and twice the repeat time. This results in an exceptionally warm, rich analog repeat with rhythmic possibilities that were simply impossible on the original unit. And while the ’74 Tape Echo sports a robust control section to dial in your sound, a quick flip of the Alt switch unlocks secondary functions on the bottom three knobs to further tweak your tone. Finally, pairing your Galaxy ’74 with the UAFX Control app allows you to swap the footswitch functions between Effects/Performance mode and Delay/Reverb mode, unlocking everything from feedback swells to echo rate ramps to bog-standard bypass options.

Wow, flutter, grit, repeat

Galaxy ‘74’s uniquely warm, atmospheric, and somewhat rough nature is inspired by one of music history's most beloved tape echo units. This pedal begins with that tone as a foundation, then surpasses it. Along with your typical Rate and Feedback controls, the Galaxy ’74’s delay section controls boast a 3-way Head Select switch and a Tape Age knob to crank up the old-school character. And while the original unit was primarily designed as a delay and reverb unit, the preamp’s unique response has become equally sought-after over the years. Thankfully, Universal Audio equipped the Galaxy ’74 with a nearly indistinguishable sonic clone of that very preamp design to fully capture the vintage vibe of the original.

The springy reverb sound of the ’70s

There’s no better effect to pair with a tape-style echo than a splashy spring reverb. Luckily, the Galaxy ’74 sports a cavernous wash of spring-style echo to layer your soundscapes! This reverb is a spot-on re-creation of the original unit’s true spring reverb tank, complete with a dwell knob for enhanced atmosphere and wild, dripping tones. Plus, Sweetwater guitarists appreciate how the Galaxy ’74 can be configured for either trails on or off operation, allowing your reverb to decay naturally even when you disengage the reverb section.

UAFX Control app for enhanced adjustability

Compatible with any iOS or Android device, Universal Audio’s UAFX Control app opens up a whole new realm of sonic possibilities. Pair up your Galaxy ’74 with UAFX Control to access versatile footswitch control configurations, real-time effect adjustments, oscillation options, and many other sound-sculpting features.

Universal Audio Galaxy ’74 Tape Echo & Reverb Pedal Features:

  • Stereo reverb and delay pedal that perfectly emulates a legendary Japanese tape echo unit from the ’70s
  • UAFX dual-engine processing delivers the highest level of sonic authenticity
  • Runs separate stereo instances of the reverb and delay sides for maximum depth and atmosphere
  • Delay side contains all the wow, flutter, and preamp grit of the original unit for an exceptionally character-packed echo sound
  • 3-position Head Select switch and tape age knob for a true-to-tape echo experience
  • Delay time is double the original unit, allowing for rhythmic divisions simply impossible on the vintage version
  • Spring-style reverb adds a cascading splash to your tone for a touch of extra atmosphere
  • Versatile tone-shaping options, with secondary functions available by flipping the Main/Alt switch
  • Optional UAFX Control app allows you to configure your footswitch controls, adjust real-time effects, and customize how your pedal’s distinct oscillation sounds
  • Utility features include silent switching, buffered bypass, analog dry through, switchable trails mode, and stereo/dual mono operation

A Blast from the Past

The year… 1975. The place... Milpitas California. I walked into my favorite music store with my dad for my 16th birthday and convinced him that I absolutely needed the Roland RE-201 Space Echo to round out my tone. I was working with him as an engineering assistant and was earning good money, but to come up with $500 cash in the mid-70s was a little bit steep for my wallet. Thankfully, I did convince him to loan me me the cash and we brought it home that day! I never got bored with that iconic tape echo. I used it primarily on my guitar rig and also in productions with bands that I would produce throughout my musical career. However, 20 years or so later, the servo motor died and I had to sell it to pay off a debt to a fellow musician. I always regretted seeing that treasured piece of gear leave.

Now the year is 2023 and I just turned 64 yesterday. As soon as I heard the UA Galaxy '74, I was convinced that they had nailed it! It arrived today for me to plug it in to my Mesa and sure enough, I am a teenager again! The joy of fiddling with the knobs, hearing the beautifully modeled saturation of a very well designed input section of the original unit brought back so many wonderful memories. But, moreover, it has already inspired so many wonderful new ideas... the joy of just sitting down and playing my guitar with a little ambience in the background and getting lost in space!

The original units sell (if you can find them) for well over $2000. And they're pretty finicky, after almost 50 years of operation. So for $, it was a no-brainer to pick up this unit, since Universal Audio did such a wonderful job of recreating an era that held musicianship and creativity in the highest esteem.

Thank you Universal Audio, and of course, thank you Sweetwater and my excellent Sweetwater sales engineer, Adam Hunter, in making my iconic birthday one of the best I've had.

In short… Buy it! You won't be disappointed.

Killer pedal

I have never owned an original Space Echo, but I have owned an Echo Fix. The Echo Fix is the ultimate modern Space Echo with extra features not available in the original. True tape delay and spring reverb, bulky and heavy. It was sublime. But, it was super noisy in my environment. I don't mean simply the tape hiss. There is interference in my neighborhood that causes unusual static and random noise (it affects other audio gear as well). The Echo Fix had to go, sadly.

This is where the UAFX Galaxy '74 comes in. I can attest that the Galaxy '74 comes really, really, REALLY close to the Echo Fix. And it is dead silent. It is super fun to play. I especially love heads 1 and 3 combined, with reverb controls at noon. It has that lovely, warm, intricate wash. Great for lead or really thick, dense rhythm tracks with those settings. I don't anticipate any reliability issues as this is a UAFX pedal. I have owned the Astra and still own the Starlight and Golden. They are top notch pedals and sound legit. And coming from an avowed analog snob, that is saying a lot!

Fantastic pedal and highly recommended!

Nice, But...

The tone from this is beautiful. It handles keyboards/synths well, too. The problem is the stereo behavior. The delays will randomly sound 100% mono, then suddenly do a wide stereo split, then back to mono, then wide stereo etc. I have no idea why UA designed it this way. It's not a defective unit as you can hear the behavior when listening to stereo demos of the pedal online too.

Possibly the best tape delay

I discovered tape delay with my TC Flashback years ago and I've been obsessed ever since. I'm not going to list all the tape delays in my collection, but I'll say the El Cap on my board got bumped by the Galaxy. It sounds soooooo good. If you are a fan, like areal obsessed fan of tape delay, this pedal is worth the investment. So why four stars? Power supplies capable of 400mA are not easy to find. I basically broke down and bought a Strymon Ojai to do the job. On the bright side; now I can power multiple UA pedals.

Great ambiance pedal

Since getting this pedal I pretty much keep it on all the time. Very adjustable from subtle background echos to fully saturated reverb echos. Being able to combine different head settings is nice to. Only knock is it's on the pricey side
